1. Title:
The Mosquito Coast, by Paul Theroux.
Year of release and number of pages: 1981, 383 pages.

2. Short description of the book
Allie Fox is a genius inventor and lives with his family in a small house in the middle of nowhere. He has lots of critics on the world. His son Charlie follows him in everything and helps him with his work. The children get tutored at home because father thinks they will learn more necessary things than at school.
Then father decides that they (the whole family; Mother, Charlie, April, Clover en Jerry) will move to the forests of Honduras. He doesn’t tell this to the kids, but they go out shopping to survive up there. They buy sleeping bags, tents and other necessary stuff.
They leave with a boat, the Unicorn. The kids still have no idea what they are going to do. The meet the Spellgood family. Charlie becomes a friend with Emily, the daughter. She asks him if she might be his girlfriend. He thinks this is ok. Every night a family is invited to eat with the captain. When it’s their turn, Father tells all his ideas to the captain. The ship is in a bad condition. The captain has no ideas how to make it work better, but father does. He fixes it and because the captain is ashamed because he couldn’t repair it himself, he’s hiding.
Then they arrive in La Ceiba and they stay in a hotel. Father thinks this hotel is too dangerous so they go to another one. The next day he buys a little town called Jeronimo. They are going with a boat. When they arrive it’s just a small village in the centre of the forests. Father is very happy with it and they stay up there.
When they are touring around to discover the place they had come, they find Indians that keep 3 white men in their hands. At least, that’s what they think. It turns out they are guests of the Indians. They want to save the men, but the Indians ask them to leave, so they did. A little time later the man come into their village. They look very scary because they are having guns. Everyone’s very scared. Then the man beat up Fat Boy, an invention of father. It’s a machine to make ice of fire. It gets on fire and the whole village burns down.
They leave and go to the Acre, the place from the children. Father doesn’t want to stay up there so they are leaving again. They get to a place nearby a little river and they build their house there. But they build the house too close to the river so when the water comes up, it floats away. Now they have a floating house as a home. You can almost call it a boat. When father left the ship, they think he drowned. Charlie and Jerry decide to go back home. But father comes back. He thinks they are betrayers because they wanted to go home. They get punished. Father says that America doesn’t exist anymore; that it was completely destroyed. But Jerry is getting more and more rebellious. He doesn’t want to do anything else than to kill his dad.
Finally they arrive at a village. There they meet the Spellgood family again. Father forbids them to see them, but Jerry and Charlie sneak out to see Emily. Charlie and Emily go kissing, and then she tells them that America still exists. They fight it out with father when they tell him this. They tie up father. The village is getting on fire by a broken generator. They try to runaway by boat, but father can’t move himself because he’s still tied up. They roll him over the deck to cut the ropes, but father still can’t move anymore. He gets a bullet in his neck. They sail further and get to the coast. But father doesn’t survive this. The rest of the family goes on with the boat to La Ceiba, on their way home.

3. My opinion
I think it’s a nice book, but also very difficult. The story is very weird; I’ve never read something like that. But it’s interesting to read a man’s thoughts that you don’t agree with. It was difficult because there were lots of difficult words in it, and it was a little long –winded.

4. The theme of the book
The theme of the book is the relation between father and son. Also flee from the country and criticism on the society. The father and son seem to have a nice band in the beginning. But because of different circumstances their band changes too. And the dream of the father is to go away from America, because he hates the society there.

5. Main character:
Allie Fox, also known as ‘father’. He’s a genius in inventing. Has a lot of criticism on the society and that’s why he wanted to go to Honduras. He’s very self –willed. He also wants to have himself right, what seems to work lots of times. He doesn’t want to let his children go to school, he thinks it’s nonsense.
Minor character:
Mother Fox. She stays faithful to her husband always, even if she know he’s going too far or if he’s wrong. She will also do everything he says. She hasn’t got her own opinion.

6. Place and time
The story is happening in this time, I think between the ’80’s and the ’90’s. This is because there are lots of people believing in America. And the machines that Allie invents are quite new. The story begins in America, nearby Springfield. Then there’s the boat the left with; that one’s going from America to Honduras. Then you have the forests of Honduras, especially Jeronimo and the Mosquito Coast are long habited by the family.
