Beschrijving hoofdpersonen:

- Grandmother: Grandmother is quite old. She almost hasn’t any contact with anyone. She is very mean especially against the children. She doesn’t show her feeling to anyone. She doesn’t how to love anyone.
- Corrine: Probably she’s between 30 and 40 years old. She’s the mother of Chris, Cathy, Carry and Cory. She loves her children deep in her heart, but she also loves money. Even so much that she betrays her children so she gets the money.
- Chris: He’s the oldest son of the family. Probably he’s about 16 years old. While the kids are in the attic he becomes a dad for Cathy Carry and Cory. He’s a very clever guy. He likes to read and he wants to become a doctor.
- Cathy: She’s the oldest daughter of the family. She’s about the same age as Chris. In the attic she doesn’t know how to deal with her feelings. That’s because she misses her father very much. She likes to listen to music. She also likes ballet, she wants to become a ballet dancer.
- Carry: Just like Cory she doesn’t get why there in the attic because they’re very young. She does is very scared. She thinks Chris and Cathy are her parents.
- Cory: Cory also doesn’t know why they’re in the attic. Just like Carry he sees Chris and Cathy as his parents.

Almost the whole book is about the life in the house, especially in the attic. The house is in Charlottville. A town in Virginia, in the USA.

Probably in the fifties or the sixties, because of the old fashion things and people quite poor back then. Also because the people still think a little confessional.

The whole story lasts something less than 5 years.

Korte samenvatting:
The story is about a family who lives in the USA. It seems a normal family, with 4 children. Until the father's birthday. The children and their mum are waiting at home for his arrive. But instead of dad, two policeman came in and they told them that their father died because of a traffic accident. Now they don't have enough money to stay in their house. Corrine decides to write her very rich mom and ask of she can move in with her children. But Corrine's dad isn't allowed to know that she has any children so they have to stay in the attic. Grandmother says that they won't have to stay in the attic for long because her man (grandfather) would die very soon, probably in a week. Grandmother brings the children food every day, although she hates them. Corrine comes to the attic everyday to give the children presents. She’s also trying to make grandfather place her back in his will.4 and a half years pass by. The children are still in the attic and in a bad shape. Chris and Cathy are discovering their bodies, and the feelings for each other. Chris still misses his mom, and he hardly can believe that his mom almost doesn’t come anymore. Cathy is angry with her mom. She blames her mom everything for what has gone wrong in their lives. Cory and Carry are very little for their age, because they didn’t got enough sunlight. They also don’t get much food anymore. When their mom comes again she tells them that she has married with Bartholomew Winslow, a rich man. She says that after grandfather died they can all live in a house and become happy again. Suddenly Cory dies because of a food poisoning. It wasn’t an accident because later it seems that Corrine and grandmother gave them donuts with arsenicum in it. Corrine takes him to the hospital when he passes out. He doesn’t come back. Now their mom doesn’t come by anymore. Chris has managed to make a key from wood so he can get out a couple of times to investigate what’s going on. He discovers that grandfather is already died. Their mom is gone with the fortune and Bart. Grandmother keeps them in the attic because if in grandfather’s will stood that when it seemed that Corrine had children, all the money has to came back. Apparently their grandfather knew of their assistance. Chris and Cathy think of a plan. They all managed to escape, again with Chris’ key. Finally after more than 4 years and 6 months are they outside!

Mening:
I think it’s a very beautiful story. How it is to have to stay in a attic for more than 4 years. I would have gone mad I think. It’s also emotional, because the it’s really tuff for the children. Although I find the writing style quite difficult, it’s hard to read. But overall I thinks it’s good book.
