Book: The newspaper boy
Author: John Escott
Year: 1979
Publisher: Heinemann

Plot1: A boy named Toby is a newspaper boy. One day he is delivering his newspapers and finds out that the shop of Mr. Spry is getting robbed. The thieves hear him and they catch him. One of the thieves wants to read the newspaper. Toby gibes him the normal newspaper. Then Toby reads the newspaper of his own town and sees that there’s a new alarm for Franklyn Electronics. Toby says that there was an accident on the hill where the thieves want to go over so the thieves go away through Franklyn Electronics. When they open the door the alarm goes off and the police catch the thieves.

Plot 2: Later, a new person lives on number seventeen: Geoffrey Elliot. Toby thinks he is George Elton that robbed a bank and stole 120000 dollar. But Toby finds out that it isn’t true and that Geoffrey Elliot was a policeman and that George Elton already was in jail.

Key passage 1: Toby listened. These men were thieves. The police were looking for them. The big man was speaking. ‘We can’t go down the hill. It is a one-way street. Traffic can only go up the hill. And there will be a police car at the bottom.’ The two stood in silence. ‘Where is the lorry?’ the big man asked Toby. At the top of the hill’, Toby said. ‘Round the corner.’ The big man smiled. He had an idea. ‘The electronics factory’, he said to yellowhead.

Key passage 2: ‘Retired?’ said Toby. ‘When did he stop work?’ ‘Two years ago’, said Harry. ‘Two years’, Toby said excitedly. ‘The newspaper cutting was two years old. George Elton escaped two years ago. And the police did not find the money.’ Harry smiled. ‘Toby’, he said. ‘Mr. Elliot is not a bank robber. I’m sure.’ ‘Mr. Elliot?’, Toby asked. ‘His name is Elliot.’ ‘Yes’, Harry replied. ‘Elliot is very like Elton, isn’t he?’

Own opinion: It’s a good book, because the story is very exciting.

What I liked about the book: What Toby was thinking, because he did some very smart things and he was lucky.

If I would recommend the book: Yes I would.

What I would change if I would be the writer: I would make it one story, because in one story you can tell more details about the story.
