1. Summary
Christopher, a boy who has Asperger’s Syndrome, discovers that the neighbour’s dog Wellington is dead. The dog belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Shears, who are divorced now. The boy wants to find out who killed the dog and, although his father disapproves, write a detective book about it. Siobhan, his teacher at the special school, encourages him to write the book. Christopher is very afraid of strangers but he pulls himself together and asks some of his neighbours if they know who did it. When Christopher’s father gets a call from Mrs. Shears telling him that his son was in her garden again, father gets angry and does not want to hear Christopher’s theory that Mr Shears is the prime suspect. He could have killed the dog to hurt Mrs Shears. Christopher finds out that Mr. Shears and his mother had a relationship. The next day Christopher looks for his book. His father took it away. He finds it in the closet with a box full of letters addressed to him. They’re from his mother. After reading them he concludes that his father was lying to him all the time and that his mother is still alive. When his father comes home he says that he killed the dog. Christopher is afraid and decides to run away. He goes to London where his mom lives. The police chases him, he manages to escape. When he finally gets to his mother’s house (who is living with Mr Shears), his father comes to take him back. Chris wants to stay with his mother, but Mr Shears doesn’t want it. So Chris’ mother leaves him and moves to Swindon with her son. Back in Swindon his father wants Christopher to forgive him so he buys him a dog. At the end he’s happy that he solved the mystery of the dog, found his mother, went to London by himself and wrote a book.
2. New end
When Christopher finally is standing in front of his mother’s apartment he’s very happy. But when he rings the door, there’s no one who opens it. He sleeps outside for the night and the next day he sits in front of the door, for a whole ady. He does this for one week. Then he gives up and goes to Swindon again. He stays with Mrs Alexander, who helped him the most with his investigation, because he still fears his father. His father finds out and comes to apologize to Christopher and tells him why he killed Wellington. He had a relationship with Mrs Shears but she cared more about the dog than about him. Christopher doesn’t understand, but after a week or two, he starts missing his father and forgives him. When he comes back home there’s a little dog waiting for him. Christopher is so happy and forgets all about Wellington, or all the rest. He’s happy that his live is back to normal. He still managed to overcome his illness and write a book.
