Meer informatie
1. Give the title + author.
The book is named Oliver Twist. The author is Charles Dickens.

2a&b. Where/when is it set?
It is mainly set in London and also on the countryside around London in the nineteenth century.

3. What kind of book is it?
I think there is bit of fiction, history and reality in this book. It is realistic in the way that it could have really happened, it is historic because it is a book from many years ago and it is fiction because it probably didn't really happen and was just made up by the writer.

4a. Who is/are the main character(s)?
The real main character of this book (how could it be anyone else!) is Oliver Twist. He’s an orphan because he never had a dad and his mother died in the workhouse where she gave birth to Oliver. His life isn’t very nice because he has to live in an orphanage and other places where he is not treated well. He is a little boy and in this book he’s about nine/ten years old. He’s a nice, sweet child who never wants to hurt anyone. In the orphanage he wears simple clothes, as all the orphans do. In the different places where he goes to he has to wear different kinds of clothes, but his clothes are generally simple.

There are also some (many!) different characters who are important. For example; Nancy, Fagin, Bill Sikes, Mr. Brownlow, Rose Maylie and Monks. But I thought that were a bit to many to describe…

b. Which character would you like to meet and why?
If I could choose, I would like to meet Nancy. She is a nice girl who only wants the best for Oliver. The only (big) problem is her boyfriend Bill Sikes and all the other male criminals around her. They want to turn Oliver into a criminal as well and they don’t treat him very well. I want to ask Nancy how she feels about the world she lives in and why she stays with Bill Sikes and Fagin. I also want to know how it came to be that she lives there and what her past is.

c. Which character would you hate to meet and why?
This book has many criminals and bad guys, so it isn’t a hard question who I would hate to meet! But if I do have to choose one of them I would choose Bill Sikes. The reason why is that he is truly evil and I don’t think he has got any humanity left inside him. The only things he ever does are things that are against the law and cruel. He also acts mean and nasty to Nancy.

5. Give a brief summary of the story.
Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse. At the moment his mother gave birth to him she died and Oliver became an orphan. In the orphanage, where he spends the first nine years of his life, they gave him the name Oliver Twist. Oliver couldn’t stay forever in the orphanage so one day they sent him to a coffin maker. There he also wasn’t treated well and so he ran away to London. In London he met Fagin, Nancy and Bill Sikes. Bill and Fagin wanted to make a criminal out of Oliver. One day he had to break into a large house and he got caught. Bill Sikes and his helper ran away and Oliver (who was shot) was found by Rose Maylie. Meanwhile, Nancy learned about Oliver’s past. She went to Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow (a nice old man, who had taken care of Oliver earlier) to tell them about Oliver’s history. It turned out that Oliver’s identity was found. He had a half-brother named Monks, who was also a criminal. Monks didn’t want anyone to know that because he wanted to keep his inherited money for himself. Meanwhile, Fagin found out that Nancy had helped Oliver and that she had told everything to Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow. The consequences were that Nancy got killed by Bill Sikes (her own lover… ) and that Bill Sikes ran away after he killed Nancy but accidentally he hanged himself. Fagin and the rest of the bad guys got caught. Eventually Oliver was adopted by Mr. Brownlow and they bought a house close to Rose Maylie. Finally Oliver had a nice and quiet life.

6. Explain the title, explain whether it was well chosen or not.
The title is very clear and logical. The book tells the story about a boy named Oliver Twist, so it is a well chosen title.

7. Give your opinion of the book.
I think it’s a beautiful story. It also has very different sides. Sometimes Oliver receives love and he has a normal life. On the other side there are Fagin and Bill Sikes, and then on that side Oliver is a lonely boy and has a cruel life. Thank goodness the end is good! Otherwise it would be very sad because you want Oliver to have a nice life because it’s such a sweet boy.

It’s an old book, so the words are also old and the linguistic usage is old and that’s interesting to read.
