Name of the author: Fay Weldon
First publication: 1993
Background:
The book starts in the beginning of the 80’s when Spicer and Annette meet eachother, after that the story goes on ten years later, so the biggest part of the story takes place in the 90’s. Annette and Spicer are a normal couple. They are not officially married but they see eachother like husband and wife. Spicer has a son (Jason) from his first marriage. Annette also had a child from her first marriage, a daughter called Susan. Spicer is owner of a wine company and he lives in a big house together with Annette and the children. I guess they are both like forty years old.
Genre:
It’s a love and drama story because it’s about problems in relationships.
Characters:
The most important character in the book is Annette. Other important persons are Gilda, Spicer, Jason, Susan, Dr. Rhea, Dr. Herman, Ernie and Marion. Annette is a nice woman, but she needs a lot of attention. Spicer is a friendly man, but after he goes into therapy this was all changing. Gilda is a good friend of Annette. They always have telephone calls toghetter and after some time she tells Annette that she had an affaire with Spicer. Dr. Rhea is the therapist of Spicer and she is guilty about Spicer’s bad behavior. I didn’t like Dr. Rhea in this book because she is the one who is guilty about the separating of Annette and Spicer. The one I really like is Annette because she always wanted the best for Spicer, her children and friends.
Summary:
It’s about the relationship between Spicer and Annette. They really fell in love but after some afflictions Spicer go into therapy. This is the worst thing they could have ever done. Dr. Rhea is the one who ordered Spicer (in difficult therapy words) to leave Annette, who was pregnant for seven months. Her baby died because of the stress in the afflictions. After a lot of afflictions they broke up toghetter and Spicer started a new relationship with Marion and Annette with Ernie. Ernie and Marion were an old couple.
Title:
This is the perfect title for the book because it describes the biggest part of what happens in the book.
Personal opinion:
I really enjoy to read this book. Sometimes it was quite unrealistic but that was making this book even better. This book would be a good movie too. I will advise this book to someone else.
