Form: Bookreport
Title book: Emma
Date of first publication: 1816
Author: Jane Austen
There's no relevant information on the authors life. Only that Jane Austen lived almost in the same time as the one the story takes place in. As far as i know there are no autobiographical elemnts in "Emma". 1. Summary: Emma Woodhouse is a rich and clever girl. She lives with her father at Hartfield in a little town called Highbury. Her gouverness Miss Taylor has just left the house to get married. Both Emma and her father feel that as a great lost. Mr. Knightley the brother of her sister's husband comes to visit them that evening. Emma tells about how much they misses Mrs Taylor. Emma believes that she has matched Miss Taylor and Miss Weston. Mr. Knightly tells her what he thinks of what she's done. Her father tells her not to make any matches again. Emma wants to become friends with someone, now that Miss Taylor has left her and she hasn't got anyone to talk to. Finally, she becomes friends with Harriet Smith. Harriet wants to b friends with her because she adores her. Emma wants to match her with the vicar Mr Elton. She invites them both at Hartfield. Harriet falls in love with Elton and Emma thinks that he feels the same. Robert Martin ,a farmer has asked Harriet to marry him but Emma tells her not to do that because he is "just" a farmer. Mr. Knightley is very mad with Emma when he hears that Harriet has done what Emma told her to do. He thinks that Harriet doesn't deserve Mr. Martin. After dinner, one night, Emma's sitting in the same carriage as Mr. Elton. When he suddenly tells her that he's in love with her! Emma doesn't want this and tells him that she thought that he was in love with Harriet. Later Emma tells Harriet what had happened the other night. Harriet is very sad because of that, but she ain't mad or something like that. Emma decides that she'll have to match Harriet with someone else to make her(Harriet) happy. Mr. Elton leaves for Bath and when he returnes home he's already married with someone. Later everybody's talking about Frank Churchill. He'll soon visit his father and his new wife. Jane Fairfax is also coming, but she's staying with Mrs. Bates. Emma wants to match Frank with Harriet. But later she's afraid she's afraid she's falling for Frank. And so does he( she thinks!). Mr. Knightely doesn't like him very much. Later she organises a dance for Frank. Mr. Knightely doesn't like to dance, but still he dances with harriet(and with Emma). At the ball, Mr. Elton behaves very rude towards Harriet. After the ball Mr. Elton wants to organise a picknick but because of the weather it has to be cancelled. They decide to go to Mr. Knightley's garden. The day after they go on a picknick, everybody's very quiet and Emma behaves rudely to Mrs. Bates. Mr. Knightely tells Emma what he tinks of her behaviour. Emma is very sad about it. Frank's aunt dies and after that he tells everybody he was secretly engaged with Jane Fairfax. Emma feels sorry for Harriet, because she thought that Harriet was in love with Frank. Harriet tells her that she wasn't in love with him, but thyat she's actually in love with Mr. Knightly. Emma thinks that Mr. Knightely loves her back. But it is till then that she "discovers" that it's actually her that is in love with Mr. Knightely
One day Mr. Knightely asks Emma to marry him because he loves her, and she says yes. But they're going to live at Hartfields, because Emma doesn't want to leave her father alone. One day Harriet comes in and tells Emma that she met Mr. Martin again and that he asked her to marry him again, only now she said yes. Both marriages were concealed within a month.
2. Describe the end of the story: The story ends with the description of 3 marriages: Jane and Frank Churchill, Harriet and Mr. Martin and Emma and Mr. Knightely. Emma also gives up her "job" as a matchmaker. 3. Time: The story takes time in the begining of the 19th century. You can tall that by looking at smal details, like Emma sitting in a carriage, because they don't have cars yet. between the beginning and the end of the story passes, roughly speaking a year. Because there's a picnic in the summer and there's also a christmas party. 4. Setting: The story takes place in England, in and around Hartfield and Highbury and sometimes in other places( for example London). 5. Characters+ 6. Relationships: Emma Woudhouse: She's the maincharacter of the book. She's 20 years old. She's got a sister Isabella. Emma lives with her father at Hartfield. Her mother died when she was still a little girl. Emma is beautiful and intelligent. She is also very rich, she belongs to "the upper class". She's also a bit arrogant. She believes that people who aren't as rich as she is are "lower" than her. She thinks she can do whatever she wants with other people, and get away with it. She thinks that when you are from "the upper class" you are better than when u were from a "lower class". Mr. Woodhouse: He's Emma's dad. He has a bad health. He leaves the management of his company completely to his youngest daughter(Emma). Mr. Knightely: He's 38 years old. He's a close friend of Emma. His brother is married with Emma's sister. He is the only one who tells Emma what she has or is doing wrong. Mr. Elton: He's a young man. Emma thinks that he is in love with harriet, but as turns out, he's actually in love with Emma. Later he'll marry a woman who's really full of herself. Harriet Smith: she's 17 years old. And she's Emma's best friend. She has an unknown father. She was placed on the Mrs. Goddard's school. She's quite attractive. She does everything Emma says she has to do. And she's very forgiving. That's because she's a bit of an airhead(in my opinion). Miss Bates: She's an older friend of the Woodhouses. She still lives with her mother. She's a bit silly. And Emma thinks she's a stupid "stupid tattler". Emma is really cruel to her( at least that's what i think) in the way she talks about her, etc.. Frank Churchill: This is the son of Mr. Weston. A lot of women think he's very attractive. Emma thinks that he is in love with her. At the end of the story he marries Jane Fairfax. Mr. Weston: He's very nice. He has married Miss Taylor( Emma's gouverness). Jane Fairfax: A very pretty and intelligent young woman. She's a cousin of Miss Bates. Emma likes to gossip about Jane. 7. Theme: I believe that the story's about the growing-up of a young and rich girl, who tries to match other people(love). I've also read once, I can't remember where, but there someone said that the message was that you can't predict anything in life, especially not love, just let it happen to you. Be open up to everything. And I also agree that this is possibly the message in from the story.
8. The Genres: The story doesn't belong to a specific genre, but to more. First of all it's a novel, a socil novel. About the way people act towards each other, for example the social code all "groups" use. 9. Explain the title of the book: The book's called Emma. That's the name of the maincharacter. I don't think the name Emma means or stand for something special. It's just the name of the maincharacter.
